Shasta Sunset

$1,860.00

The sheer size of the mountain and the snow on its peaks make it that much more grand and monumental. It definitely has the power of presence that the locals describe. In this painting I communicate this majesty by painting a quick sunset painting where the valleys and peaks of the mountain are translated in vibrant yellow/orange and deep blues in the shadows. My inspiration for these colors come from my long ago mentor and instructor Wayne Thiebaud. He taught me to see color and not be afraid of exaggerating or expressing it. Following this traditon backwards, landscape painters such as Maynard Dixon, Gregory Kondos, Elmer Bishoff, and Richard Diebenkorn, and even further, Claude Monet and Vincent VanGogh, and The Fauvism art movement, all use vibrant colors to describe feeling, light and abstraction in landscape. Most of the above painters paint on site, outdoors; including myself. Through my own experience, I find the longer I look, the more I see. The longer I look, the more colors I see. The many hours spent in this meditation, the more the landscape becomes something else; line, form, space, atmosphere, color, shape - becoming more and more abstract and symbolic in a way that can't be described in words. An inner landscape reflecting back the physical landscape and visa-versa. As with all my work, I use the most light-fast paints I can afford, usually Gamblin paints, and a conservation grade varnish to prevent yellowing with age. All work comes with hardware and is ready to hang.
